Historic Preservation in New Jersey
The New Jersey Historic Preservation Office is committed to enhancing the quality of life for the residents of New Jersey through the preservation and appreciation of our collective past.
Our mission is to assist the residents of New Jersey in identifying, preserving, protecting and sustaining our historic and archaeological resources through the implementation of the state's historic preservation program.
We provide assistance through our annual conference, consultation with staff professionals, training workshops, co-sponsorship of history and historic preservation related activities, the Historic Preservation Planning Bulletin and other free publications.

The National Historic Preservation Act establishes certain State Historic Preservation Office responsibilities. These include:

* ensuring comprehensive statewide historic preservation planning;
* conducting a statewide survey to identify historic properties;
* nominating properties to the National Register of Historic Places;
* administering the Federal historic preservation, grants-in-aid program within the State;
* assisting local governments in developing historic preservation programs and in becoming certified to participate in the national program;
* advising and assisting in Federal, State, and local historic preservation projects;
* participating in the review of Federal, State, and local undertakings that may affect historic properties; and
* providing public information, education, training, and technical assistance in historic preservation.
